When we were supposed to take this trip last summer, but couldn't because Ryan took very ill quite suddenly, Israel wasn't on our original itinerary. When I was visiting Ryan in the hospital I tried to cheer him up by saying we can easily take this trip next year so don't worry about missing it. He replied with "I feel like I've already done that trip." I knew it wasn't nice to get frustrated with a hospital patient so after a deep breath I said "ok, but I hope you can appreciate all the planning (I did) that went into this and it would be a shame to waste it." The compromise was to skip the UK at the beginning and fit in Israel somewhere because it was a place that Ryan was eager to visit.
We stayed in Tel Aviv and explored the city on our first day on our own, then on our second and third days we did guided tours. Well worth the money. Although, I do think that the Dead Sea is overrated. I'm glad I saw it and swam in it, but I wouldn't rush back.
Having spent some time in Palestine visiting Bethlehem, I feel so lucky to hold a Canadian passport. We crossed the border back into Israel with ease. We left Tel Aviv two days before the situation worsened and the alarms were sounding in the city. I'm so glad we got to see everything when it was calm. It's really unfortunate what's happening over there because it's such a beautiful place so rich in history and culture.
As hot as it was on the walking day tours we took, it was so worth it. I learned and saw so much.
